The Richmond Arms is a magnificent 25 bedroom hotel nestling on the southern side of the Square in the tranquil village of Tomintoul.
Tomintoul sits at an altitude of 354m / 1160ft on the northern slopes of the Cairngorm Mountains and claims to be the highest village in the Highlands. Tomintoul today is an attractive village with grand stone-built buildings.

The 40-foot wide main street is part of the original design, as is the grassy square that forms the focal point of the village with a drinking fountain dating to 1915.

The 4th Duke of Gordon developed the village in 1776 to house the populations of a number of dispersed settlements across his estate; in part to improve people’s fairly miserable lives but it was also designed to make it easier to stamp out cattle rustling and whisky smuggling, both prevalent aspects of life in this part of the Highlands.

Distilling has played a significant role in the economy of the area and in 1982 a third of the area’s male workforce was employed in distilleries which numbered 25 within 20 miles of Tomintoul. Though numbers may have since fallen the importance of the industry has not.

Seven miles north of Tomintoul is Glenlivet, the best known distillery to visit in the area. Glenlivet is part of the “Malt Whisky Trail” and offers tours and visitor facilities that easily match the excellence of its location.
